Nonna's Bread

Every special occasion included this simple but wonderful bread. Danielle says the smell of it brings back so many memories and creates new ones. Over the years the recipe has become pizza dough, sandwich bread, flatbread — anything you can think of that requires bread.

Each one of Nonna's children has this recipe etched on a cutting board, for easy access and to reflect on special times together. Most of her recipes are written with a lovely message to them. Now it's a message to you. Enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 packet yeast
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 1½ tablespoons salt
  • ¼ cup cooking oil
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1½ cups water
  • 4–5 cups flour

Directions

  1. Mix the yeast and ¼ cup warm water well. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Once completed, mix in the remaining ingredients and knead.
  3. Set aside for about 2½ hours.
  4. Cut into balls. Grease each ball and the baking pan, then set aside until risen to the top of the pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Butter the tops.
