Maw Maw's Peanut Butter Fudge

Four ingredients, one saucepan, and no candy thermometer. This is the kind of fudge that shows up on a holiday table in a tin and disappears before anybody gets a second piece. Denise Uzee sent it in from her Maw Maw's kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1½ cups peanut butter (Reese's recommended)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Butter, for greasing the pan

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pan. Generously butter a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Cook the sugar mixture. Combine the sugar and evaporated milk in a large saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture reaches a soft boil.
  3. Add the peanut butter. Immediately remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the peanut butter and vanilla until smooth and completely combined.
  4. Pour and set. Pour the fudge mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  5. Cool and cut. Allow the fudge to cool completely and set before cutting into squares.

Recipe Notes

  • Peanut butter: Use your favorite brand, but Reese's gives this fudge an especially rich peanut-butter flavor.
  • For best results: Do not overcook the sugar mixture, as this can make the fudge dry or crumbly.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
