Charlie's Ping Pong Ice Cream

A New Orleans classic homemade ice cream dessert. Two ingredients — Barq's red cream soda and condensed milk — churned in an old-fashioned ice cream maker. Charlie says it tastes just like a strawberry snowball with condensed milk. Swap in orange creme soda and you've got a dreamsicle.

Ingredients

  • 2 liters Barq's red cream soda
  • 2 cans condensed milk
  • Ice
  • Rock salt

Directions

  1. Put the aluminum canister from your old-fashioned ice cream maker in the freezer the night before you make the ice cream. Also put the cream soda in the fridge overnight.
  2. Whisk together the cream soda and condensed milk until well mixed.
  3. Put the mixture in the fridge for an hour to chill.
  4. Pour the mixture into the canister and assemble the ice cream maker.
  5. Operate the maker per its instructions, packing with ice and rock salt.
  6. Ping pong will be ready after about 60–90 minutes, soft-serve style. Put it in the freezer for about an hour if you want it firmer.

Charlie's Tip

Make it with orange creme soda instead for a "dreamsicle."
